Follow the Heron Home
03:02
|
|||
The back of the winter is broken
And light lingers long by the door
Oh the seeds of the summer have spoken
In gowans that bloom on the shore
By night and day we'll sport and we'll play
And delight as the dawn dances over the bay
Sleep blows the breath of the morning away
And we follow the heron home
In darkness we cradled our sorrow
And stoked all our fires with fear
Now these bones that lie empty and hollow
Are ready for gladness and cheer
By night and day we'll sport and we'll play
And delight as the dawn dances over the bay
Sleep blows the breath of the morning away
And we follow the heron home
Long may you sing of the salmon
And the snow-scented sounds of your home
While the north wind delivers its sermon
Of ice and salt water and stone
By night and day we'll sport and we'll play
And delight as the dawn dances over the bay
Sleep blows the breath of the morning away
And we follow the heron home

Selkie
03:29
|
|||
Dyin to be home now to touch another's hand
But the thought of packing cases, a dread fills up my mind
What happens when you hold your breath for months of being brave
The pain denied, the tears un-cried, they surface like a wave
And its silly to be talking now of how we all were brave
When all we did was stay indoors for forever and a day
Yet somehow as I face the door and head for family
I'm more lonely and heartbroken now I smell the salty sea
And this Selkie's standing naked on the shore
Watching as it all returns to what it was before
Standing in a newborn skin of calm and peace and discipline
Wondering what it costs us now, to stop and start again
The end of being brave is now a scary place to stand
The end of lonely moments, the taking of a hand
Anyone can carry the ocean with a heart
But to watch it float away unchanged
It tears us all apart.
And what is to remember, and what is to forget
What remains unspoken from when we were at our best
And how are we to honour the grief, the memories?
Must we walk the path laid out or can we swim these salty seas?
Oh this Selkie's standing naked on the shore...

Bell, book and candle
03:09
|
|||
The blue around a morning moon
The colour of your eyes
I remember holding you
A fall through summer skies
You're everything that I've become
In every word I say
I need a bell, book and candle
To keep your ghost away
To keep your ghost away
To keep your ghost away
I need a bell book and candle
To keep your ghost away
White horses on a troubled sea
Your smile will flash through time
Up ahead a blackbird's wing
Your hair will come to mind
Every night I see your face
When I have to pray
I need a bell, book and candle
To keep your ghost away Keep your ghost away
Keep your ghost away
I need a bell, book and candle
To keep your ghost away
Just before the thunder roars
I sense you next to me
And as I move through nature
I know where you will be
So I must keep myself apart
And here is where I'll stay
With a bell, book and candle
To keep your ghost away

Tumbling into the Sea
04:09
|
|||
Daylight twinkles through the blinds,
The sun is warming the sky
And to a barking dog and the chattering of little birds,
I open up a weary eye
And there’s coffee smells and tall church bells,
The radio is singing a song.
And my heart is full of everything that’s possible
Tumbling around in a song.
But sometimes when I hear a reel whispering across the breeze
Oh my heart falls down like a mountain side in summer time
Tumbling into the sea.
Night time flickers urban bright
The neon shadows abound
And there music here and there’s entertainment everywhere
Going for the price of a song.
But those cardboard spaces, pop up places, cast a shadow too long
So when my heads too full of everything that’s possible
I turn it all around with a song
Then sometimes when I hear a reel, whispering across the breeze
Then my heart lifts up like that mountain side in summer time
Tumbling into the sea.

Harbour
03:43
|
|||
Suitcase packed again,
A life loaded into boxes.
The case is closed a tear is shed
It seems like I spend my life packing up the pieces, moving on, moving ahead
I came into this place with a heart that was aching
No longer sure who I could be
But you have held my heart when it was cold and silent
Til now I hear its beat again
Oh you were harbour, harbour
For a heart that was aching
You were harbour for a vessel that could no longer sail
And as I leave this safest harbour
For a world not yet known
Somehow this harbour will remain for me a home
- this harbour will remain for me a home.
The Christmas lights are up, brightening up the pavements
They're flashing, dancing in the dark
And I who was so sure that so much was forsaken
Find technicolour floods my heart
Oh you were harbour, harbour
For a heart that was aching
You were harbour for a vessel that could no longer sail
And as I leave this safest harbour
For a world not yet known
Somehow this harbour will remain for me a home
- this harbour will remain for me a home.

Carry Me Away
02:22
|
|||
I'm sliding silver sweet through morning waking time
A gentle kiss hello
Eyes still closed, hearts still open wide
You carry me away
And I need no proper paper plans today
No cardboard cutouts round some future I would make
No, you are here with me
There's nothing more I want or need.
You carry me away. you carry me away
Oh I would wipe that frown with dream tinged fingertips
I'd reach across some line
But sure all we have is just this here-and-now
So I say your name out loud
- can you hear me?
I need no proper paper plans today
No cardboard cutouts round some future I would make
No, you are here with me
There's nothing more I want or need.
You carry me away. you carry me away
Come carry me away ...

Baking Bread
02:28
|
|||
Lately, I've been baking bread
- its such a simple thing.
A welcome for the day without a word
Now my house fills with sweet sweet smells
Simple things can wake a weary world
Lately I've been sewing seeds in my own garden,
They build my bones and taste of sunshine too.
I wish I'd listen hard to my grandfather.
A life of sewing seeds was all he knew
Lately I've been singing songs instead of all the things,
that I should do before the day is through
Its a sad sad thing that we all sing
too few songs before our time is done
Lately I've been watching love come through my own front door
We break bread, sing and dance and eat our fill
Though the dawning day carries you away
The love we make is in these old walls still
So lately, I've been baking bread...

Seoithín Seó
04:29
|

Seoithín, seo hó, mo stór é, mo leanbh
Mo sheoidín gan cealg, mo chuid gan tsaoil mhór
Seothín seo hó, nach mór é an taitneamh
Mo stóirín 'sna leaba, 'na chodladh gan brón.
(Seoithín Seó is an untranslateable croon for a sleeping baby ...
Seoithin Seo, my heart and my baby
My flawless jewel, my part of the big world
Seoithin Seo, isn't it just wonderful
My little heart in bed and asleep without any sorrow)
A leanbh mo chléibh go n-eirí do chodhladh leat
Séan is sonas gach oíche le do chóir
Tá mise le do thaobh ag guídhe ort na mbeannacht
Seothín a leanbh is ní imeoidh tú liom
(Oh child of my heart, may your sleep be calm and good
Blessings and happiness each night be yours
I am beside you, praying for blessings on you,
Seoithin my baby and don't leave me now.)
Its tea time in Melbourne, its morning in Limerick
Jacks in his pyjamas, we're skyping good night
Its sunrise, its sunset,
Time doesn't matter here
Wave to your Granda, kiss Granny good night
Like the waves on the sea shore, our love it pours over you
Like the sea hugs the shoreline, we hold you tonight
We're half in Australia, and half here in Ireland
Distance is nothing when your smile is so bright.
Seoithín...

Good People
04:19
|
|||
My neighbours put a Budda in the backyard
Its standing all serene among the tubs
Of onions, thyme and lettuce leaves
Of meditations and ice cream
He says we'll take it one step at a time
That Buddas gonna keep my heart alive.
My neighbours put a candle out her window
I'm sure its gonna fall on someones head
She says its her best crystal
Ah but better out than in sir
We're taking this just one step at a time
My neighbors gonna keep my heart alive.
These are good people who keep on keepin'
Good people keep my heart alive
Good people, who keep on keepin'
Good people keep us all alive
We're taking this one step at a time.
My nephews got a line in jokes and rhymes
He practices the words to keep in time
Then he leans to ask his Dad what the punchline is again
To see those two boys laugh is just sublime
My nephews gonna keep my heart alive
My friends have all got kids who're at the front
Who're mopping brows and floors just hanging tough
And the love them with warm porridge
With advice and unnamed worries
My friends have wordless love that holds the line
My friends are gonna keep my heart alive
These are good people who keep on keepin'
Good people keep my heart alive
Good people, who keep on keepin'
Good people keep us all alive
We're taking this one step at a time.
Taking this just one step at a time.

The Road to Drumleman
03:35
|
|||
Oh the springtime returns to the Laggan again
And the lark sweetly sings o'er the green fertile plain
So I'll take the road that is dearest to me,
The road to Drumleman that winds to the sea.
For I've made many friends there on every green mile
And the folks always greet me with a wave and a smile
If I spend all my days here, it's happy I'll be,
On the road to Drumleman that winds to the sea.
For we sat round the fireside when the winter winds blew
And we laughed and we sang till the night was well through
Then we'd have a good dram and a wee cup o' tea
For the road to Drumleman that winds to the sea.
And the long summer days when we tramped the hills o'er
And spent hours at the Eenans or Creggan's wild shore
And the long summer night made shadows to flee
On the road to Drumleman that winds to the sea.
Oh these days passing swiftly bring changes I know
And as time passes on from this place we must go
But I'll always remember while the heart beats in me,
The road to Drumleman that winds to the sea.
